Help for those affected by ADHD

Causes Of Adhd

A lot of people struggle with stress nowadays. People who struggle with stress often have other things going on with them such as not being able to concentrate, not getting things done in time, unable to complete homework assignments, moody, happy one minute and mad the next. If are or no of a person struggling with several of those things, they might have ADHD.

If you think you might have ADHD, it’s nothing to get even more stressed out about. The causes of ADHD is unknown at this time, but they are really working hard to figure out what is going on and why people get it. Doctors do know that it is mainly a chemical imbalance of the brain, but for now that is all that they know. Knowing that little bit of information has helped them figure out what an ADHD person needs to function right in the world.

Children, young teens, young adults, middle-aged adults or even seniors can get ADHD. (also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) Doctors are encouraging patients to change their diet since they don’t really know the causes of ADHD and will go over with them what needs to be changed.

An ADHD diet can really help. What do you do on an ADHD diet? You mainly have to cut back on sugar and make sure that you don’t have food items that contain NutraSweet. There’s a lot more to it, but the diet is very easy and something that you could adjust to. Not only that, there’s a lot of great food items available, so you would have plenty of choices.

Many people don’t like the word diet. If you are one of those people, you should talk with your doctor about it. Another thing that’s really important for ADHD patients is being on either stimulants or medications. Medication helps people with ADHD. Sometimes it can take awhile before they are able to know what kind of dosage to put you on, but when they get it right, you will be able to notice the difference.

Just remember that you are not alone. Talking with someone that’s a trained professional about this will help you and your family. It might be a long road to recovery, but there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Just hang in there and don’t feel like you’re a really bad person for having ADHD.

Try your best on what you know you can do, take breaks when needed and talk your feelings out to your doctor and family. Be honest with how you are feeling and let them know. Since we don’t know the causes of ADHD at this time, talking about how you’re feeling and what is going on will really help.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

A really common disorder now a days is Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder otherwise known as ADHD. There have been a lot of studies on ADHD recently because it is getting so common.

Doctors now know that the main reason why people get ADHD is because of a chemical imbalance. But what causes the chemical imbalance is still unknown.

They have found that diet and stimulates or other medication really help those who struggle with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. There are many stimulates available right now and a lot of new ones coming up that doctors are watching carefully. They believe stimulants help patients balance things out since ADHD is after all, a chemical imbalance.

What is a chemical imbalance? A chemical imbalance just simply means that you’re missing a chemical or getting to much of a chemical needed in the brain. But like I said it’s still unknown what causes the chemical imbalance.

However, doctors have learned that with the right diet and stimulates, a person diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder can still function and do great. If you feel you have this disorder, you should start right now looking into changing your diet, even before you talk with your doctor.

Many people have changed their diet and it helped confirm that they do have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Why? Because they start feeling better right away.

You’ll need to do some research on diets and see what foods you can and can not have. Now, don’t think that because you have changed your diet you should not visit your doctor. You should still go.

The reason why you should still see your doctor is because he will give you a stimulate and start you off on a dosage that will be low. It will be low to begin with because your doctor will be observing how you act and if you improve any. If you don’t improve, they will up the dosage. Your doctor will work one on one with you and it’s best to be open and honest about the problems you are having.

People of all ages get attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and are diagnosed with it almost every single day. That’s how common this is starting to become and why they are really studying the disease now.

There isn’t one case that is alike. Children as young as four or five can have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and adults at any age can get it. Adults have a harder time accepting the fact that they have ADHD because many think only children can get it.

There are ADHD support groups online and sometimes they will have them around where you live. People who struggle with ADHD are encouraged to go because it helps just knowing that you are not alone.

Medication For ADHD

When someone is told that they have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder aka ADHD, they get overwhelmed because they don’t fully understand what it is. It’s simply a chemical imbalance that can be fixed with having a proper diet and taking medications, plus support from either family, friends or your therapist.

A lot of people have ADHD now and because of it, new studies are being done. Most of those new studies have brought some real positive results.

Thanks to these new studies, you can enjoy life without having to worry so much because there is a variety of medication for ADHD for you to chose from and talk about with your doctor.

At first, there wasn’t a lot of medicine to choose from, but because so many people are being diagnosed with it now, they had to act fast to change it.

Almost every person requires a different dosage or medicine then another person. What might work best on one person, might not on someone else. They wanted to make sure that all patients who struggle with this disorder had some kind of medication for ADHD.

One of the most debated medication for ADHD is Ritalin. Some have been able to handle it just fine while others have had complaints with it. A sister medication of Ritalin is Metadate CD. This is longer acting and has methlpehenidate.

You will find out that doctors like giving stimulants more so then medication. They are just simply treatments that might help your child fight depression and be able to concentrate throughout the day. Or if you’re an adult, it might help you focus on work so you can complete your tasks on time.

They have short and long Stimulants. The great thing with medication for ADHD is if you don’t like capsules, they also have chewable tablets, plus they have oral solutions that might work better for you.

The side effects are usually the same for all stimulants. These side effects can happen with adults and children. Some of the side effects include, stomachaches, social withdrawal and decreased appetite.

There are more, but you will need to read the side effects depending on what medication for ADHD you get.

Whenever you start having side effects, the doctor usually just changes the dosage and you will feel much better. That’s why it’s important to let them know.

They also have support groups to talk about medication for ADHD and stimulants. If you have more questions, you should think about seeing if there are any in your area or groups online that might help you.

Many adults who struggle with ADHD, don’t realize that certain foods can cause problems. Nor do they realize how important it is to watch their diet. Your diet can cause you to feel better or worse. There are certain food items that you must avoid, but they are easily replaced.

One thing that might be really hard on some adults is avoiding coloring in foods. These foods should avoided and nowadays, that can be very hard to do.

However, you will be amazed when going through a cook book, how many food items actually don’t require food coloring. This is excellent news if your wanting to stay on a diet for ADHD.

Usually you can tell if you are sensitive to foods that include food coloring when you’re a child. But sometimes it doesn’t show up until later because of the changes in your body.

Also a lot of adults think having NutraSweet might be alright. It’s actually not. You should avoid anything with NutraSweet in it.

There are plenty of other alternatives you can use to replace NutraSweet with such as Splenda or Stevia.

Avoid all processed meats

Hotdogs is something that a lot of kids enjoy and even adults like getting because it’s quick and easy to fix. However, on a diet for ADHD, you should avoid all processed meats. Don’t even treat yourself to some once in a while.

Some of the all time favorite processed meats include : bacon, salami, sausage and ham.

Keep in mind there are other alternatives, such as meats that have leaner cuts (as long as
they don’t have chemicals in them, like lamb.) Make sure that you avoid using a lot of oil when you cook. Learn how to either bake or broil foods.

Also, make sure that you review the chemicals on the package. If there are any chemicals listed, don’t buy it.

Cut back on fried foods

Fried foods is something else adults and children love to eat. This is something else you should cut back on a lot when it comes to a diet for ADHD. You can have some occasionally, but overall you should avoid having any fried foods.

There are so many other awesome foods available that you can have besides fried food. I know, that even means no fried chicken either.

Adult ADHD Symptoms

Many people think ADHD is something only children have. Well it’s not. People of all ages can struggle with ADHD, it does not matter what age the person is, they can still have a very hard time dealing with it.

People usually only focus on children when they have it and have a hard time knowing what adult ADHD symptoms are. Here are a few tips that might help you understand when an adult suffers with ADHD.

Willpower problems

One of the most common myths is people often think someone struggling with adult ADHD symptoms, must have willpower problems. They think if they force the adult to try and focus, they will.

Being forceful has caused a lot of fighting for many families and couples. It has nothing to do with their willpower. Their lack of focus is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. That is your number one tip you should look out for.

If your loved one is struggling with willpower problems and lack of focus, don’t jump to the conclusion that they don’t care.

Here’s an example of when someone might be struggling with adult ADHD symptoms.

Lets say they have a test coming up at college and have a hard time focusing on studying for it. They get frustrated and throw the book on the ground. You might think that they just don’t really care about the subject and that they don’t want to study. That isn’t the case at all.

Fact is, they really do care and want to learn, but having hours of studying overwhelms them. When something like that happens, it’s good to have breaks.

Learning problem

Another one of the adult ADHD symptoms is when the adult has a learning problem or psychiatric problem.

Sometimes the person can be slow to learn things or just be really good at one subject and fail at all of the others. Don’t get frustrated when they are only good with one subject, encourage them in that subject and help them with the other subjects.

ADHD is very common

A lot of people think that if they are married to someone with adult ADHD symptoms, they must be the only ones. This is not true.

ADHD is very common now. Just because your spouse struggles with it, doesn’t mean that you have to argue a lot. Sit down and talk about options that could help them, like medication.

Adults usually don’t like taking much medication, but when you have adult ADHD, it really helps.

Information on ADHD – 3 Things You Must Know

What is ADHD?

ADHD is short for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. About 10-40 percent of children with ADHD will carry it into adulthood.

Impulsiveness, inattention, and hyperactivity are what make up ADHD. Knowing the difference between these symptoms will help you determine which they may have.

If your child has problems interrupting during a conversation, is disorganized or does not think about the consequences of their actions, then he or she could have impulsiveness.

If your child has difficulty listening and paying attention or is easily distracted and doesn’t complete their work, he or she could have inattention.

If your child has the inability to sit still, fidgets and squirms, is restless and

has restless sleep or climbs on things, he or she could have hyperactivity.

- Causes of ADHD -

The biggest influence doctors believe to be the cause of ADHD is pregnancy. Any chemical the mother gets near during pregnancy could cause damage to the unborn baby’s brain. Drinking and smoking while pregnant can cause things to go wrong in the unborn’s brain that the mother could have avoided.

Genetics is also to blame for 75 percent of the cause of ADHD as well as the environment. While in some places the air is clean, other places the air is polluted and holds toxins, which could cause brain damage.

- ADHD and Other Disorders -

ADHD is found to be associated with other disorders that deal with

behavior problems and inability to have control over the mind. These disorders would be; Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct order, Primary Disorder of Vigilance, Bipolar Disorder, and Anxiety disorders.

* Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is an ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior toward authority figures.

* Conduct Disorder is behavioral problems such as physical aggression, destructiveness, truancy, lying, vandalism, stealing, and cruelty to that of humans and animals.

* Primary Disorder of Vigilance is the same as ADHD but with the person appearing to be hyperactive to stay alert. Over time the symptoms become worse.

* Bipolar Disorder is where the person has episodes of abnormally elevated moods. This is clinically referred to as mania, or if it is milder, then it’s called hypomania.

* Anxiety Disorder is a persistent or irrational fear that could be accompanied by headaches, sweating, hypertension, and/or palpitations.

Many popular treatments for ADHD are medications and behavior therapy. Studies don’t show whether it is safe to take the medication for more than a couple years. If you or a person you know has been taking the pills longer than a couple years, talk to your doctor for advice.

Pre-schoolers should never take medication; however talk to their doctor for other helpful ideas.

If you choose not to or are against taking medicine, there are natural ADHD treatments available such as life style changes, counseling, and/or behavior modifications.

Adult ADHD – Children Aren’t The Only Ones That Suffer

About 5% of adults have ADHD with only 1% seeking help.

Some adults don’t even realize they have it. They believe their actions and lack of focus are just “normal for some people.”

ADHD is not brought on in adult years. Adults that have ADHD had it as a child, yet some were never diagnosed. Their lack of attention, disorginization, hyperness and lack of focusing on even the simplest things were looked upon as laziness and disrespect. But this simply isn’t the case.

ADHD is a chemical imbalance in the brain. With proper knowledge you can find a way to deal with and control your symptoms. The more you learn, the better you are to handle what ADHD throws at you.

ADHD and Sleeping Problems

- It is believed that ADHD and sleeping problems are related. -

When children are over tired, they tend to show many escalated symptoms of ADHD (fidgety, nervousness, hyper activity, inability to focus and stay focused.)

If your child displays excess crankiness, anger/aggression or hyperness, this could simply be the need for more sleep.

Studies have shown children up to the age of 12 need an average of 10-11 hours of sleep per night, age 13 – adults need 8-9 hours per night.

ADHD and sleeping problems should not be taken lightly. If I had known the link between the two when my daughter was first diagnosed, both of our lives would have been so much easier, not to mention happier.

All those times I got upset and my daughter got in trouble for not going to sleep when she was suppose to, could have been avoided. Then we would have been spared the anger and resentment we both felt for each other.

There are some very good books written on the subject of ADHD and sleeping problems. The more you learn, the better prepared you are to deal with ADHD and all the challenges that come with it.

Don’t be like me and wait a long time to take action. Your child depends on you to learn their needs and help them make the adjustments nessesary.

If you don’t help them, who will?
